Learn to recognize the signs of domestic violence in clients, co-workers, family and friends. Participants will leave with the tools they need to help DV survivors get the support and resources they need. We will also examine the broader picture of racialized gender-based violence in our society and around the world, and how they create a pipeline to homelessness.
Presenter Mae Bennett will guide participants through the types of abuse, the cycle of abuse, and warning signs of it. Additionally, she will talk about trauma, trauma responses, and the best practices to help clients experiencing domestic and gender based violence.
Presenter Oliva Montgomery will be speaking to participants about the intersection of race and domestic and gender based violence. She will discuss the ways that systemic oppression has led to medical trauma, legalized lynching, the school to prison pipeline, and the criminalization of Black families. She will also outline community-based responses to domestic and sexual violence, which decrease collective trauma for those who have been harmed, those who have caused harm, and their families and communities.
While we will focus on Cuyahoga County, the bulk of information presented in this webinar will be applicable in any community.
