NEOCH PRESENTS ROOT CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS, OUR SIGNATURE EDUCATION SERIES!
TWO-PART EDUCATION SERIES: THURSDAY NOVEMBER 16, FROM 6:00 – 8:00 PM, AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19 FROM 1:00 - 6:00 PM.
PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST REGISTER FOR EACH SESSION SEPARATELY.
Dispel homelessness myths and learn how the problem is perpetuated through systemic racism and the commodification of housing. Hear from NEOCH staff about the historical and modern causes of homelessness, and what we can do to build a world where everyone has a safe place to call home. This two-part series includes one Zoom session and one in-person session.
Part 1 of our Root Causes of Homelessness series will be a Zoom-based webinar. Through dialogue, interactive activities, and presentations from experts, participants will learn about the root causes of homelessness in the Cleveland area. This will include historical context as well as current issues; redlining, blockbusting, white flight, gentrification, housing as a commodity, evictions, source of income discrimination, and fair housing issues will be discussed. Participants will be asked to think about how their work relates to the root causes of homelessness and changes they can advocate for within their communities.
Recommended readings for Part 1 include: Homelessness and Racial Disparities & Beyond White Flight
Part 2 of our Root Causes of Homelessness series will be an in-person community tour, that kicks off at NEOCH's office, 3631 Perkins Ave. NEOCH’s Board President will lead us on a tour of Cleveland's historic Lee Harvard neighborhood. Participants will then travel to Cleveland’s near west side and walk through areas where unhoused people typically access resources. The tour guides will point out signs of the issues we will discuss in Part 1 (redlining, gentrification, housing as a commodity, etc.) Tour will involve both riding on a bus and walking around several neighborhoods. Please let us know ASAP of any access needs or mobility challenges, and we’ll do our very best to find a solution.
We have a suggested contribution of $30 to register for this tour. NEOCH is dedicated to making our education programs accessible to poor and working-class people. If you can't afford the $30 fee, please enter the amount you can contribute (from $0-$25) on your registration.
Recommended listening/reading for Part 2 includes: Scarlet E podcast: 40 Acres
