This workshop is directed at staff of agencies (social workers, case workers and advocates) working with youth. It is also for, accepting and inclusive families, faith communities, educators, caregivers and youth-serving professionals, that are key to the success and well-being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) young people.Lighthouse Youth & Family Services’ cultural competency training focuses on promoting safe, competent and supportive care and welcoming environments for LGBTQ young people. LGBTQ youth are often subject to harassment at school, erasure in faith communities, rejection from their families and hostility in youth-serving systems.
Attendees will have the opportunity to:
•Explore personal values regarding LGBTQ youth and learn the importance of balancing personal beliefs with professional responsibilities.
•Increase competence in discussing sexual orientation and gender identity.
•Practice identifying issues of risk, challenges and strengths that are specific to LGBTQ people, their families, other caregivers and service delivery systems.
•Practice identifying affirmative interventions with LGBTQ youth, their families, other caregivers and service providers.
•Develop an action plan that will develop or enhance professional and agency cultural competency.
