This workshop is designed for community members, activists, and staff of agencies (social workers, case workers and advocates) working with people who are experiencing barriers to housing, in particular subsidized housing, due to criminal background screenings. The workshop will have a focus on subsidized housing but will also discuss fair housing issues that touch on private rental housing and criminal background screening as well.
Participants will learn how to appeal denials of clients’ subsidized housing applications based upon their clients’ criminal background, using fair housing law to improve client outcomes and access to housing. Practice exercises, guidance, and templates will enhance participants’ skills. Information on additional community resources will also be provided.
Furthermore, the training will discuss the relationship of racism and mass incarceration with collateral sanctions that flow from criminal convictions. It explains the connection of these issues to federal fair housing law, that was passed in the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968, and emerging legal rights related to fair housing, criminal background screening.
Finally, we will have speakers for people directly impacted by collateral sections, local lawyers, and fair housing experts. A full list of presenters will be updated when confirmed
